Irony is a primary component of Saukko's essay. Verbal irony is when the intended meaning of words used is the direct opposite of their usual sense. Situational irony is a combination of circumstances or a result that is the opposite of what is expected or considered appropriate. a) Is one or both of these modes of irony at work in Saukko's essay? Determine how irony is used by Saukko to give her process analysis its satirical edge and explain what effect her strategy has on you the reader.

b) Saukko's tongue-in-cheek recipe for ecological damage is presented with mock seriousness to produce an ironic effect. Does the fact that her essay is a put-on indicate to you that she is not serious about or committed to the position taken?

c) What is her objective in terms of the point she wants to impress upon readers? Does she ever state this point outright, or does she leave it to readers to think it out for themselves and draw their own conclusions?

d) Articulate the impact of this essay on your own thinking about the issue under discussion.
