3. There seem to be good grounds for making the assumption. Business plans for capital spending
this year are so strong that they may spill over into the coming year. The increase in capital
spending for the second half of the year may turn out to be a mainstay of the economy. Investors
have shown their interest in the capital-spending sector by increased investment in business
equipment, instruments and electronics, and movie and recreational stocks. This could come as a
welcome event, since many business analysts are now predicting a recession in the latter part of
this year or the beginning of the next year.
