THE FARMER, HIS SON, AND THE DONKEY
Once upon a time a farmer had a donkey that had become the special pet of the
farmer's son. The humble beast would follow the boy everywhere if allowed.
The day came, however, that the farmer needed more money than selling his crops had
provided. The farmer did not want to sell the donkey, but no other way seemed open.
"Son," said the farmer one morning, "put a rope around the donkey's neck. You and I
and the donkey are going to the market town." The son was eager to go to the market
town. He had not gone there often, but he knew the market was an exciting place.
Besides, going to the market town meant a day away from the hard work in the fields.
The farmer decided that no one should ride the donkey. If the donkey looked hot and
tired when they arrived at market, he would not be sold as easily.
A short distance down the road, the travelers met some farm girls. The girls laughed as
they passed by. One said, "Look at those foolish people! They are walking when they
could be riding!"
Now, the farmer was one of those people who cannot stand to be laughed at. Even
though his decision to walk had been a good one, he ordered his son to get on the
donkey's back.
The boy had been riding for a short while when they passed an inn. Several elderly
gentlemen were resting in front of the inn.
"Will you look at that!" said one of the old men. "That strong young boy is riding while
his poor father walks! Such indolence! What is this younger generation coming to! When
I was a boy, I never rode while my father walked!"
Not wishing to appear to be a father who did not have control over his son, the father
said to the boy, "Maybe they are right, son. It probably would look better if I rode and
you walked."
The boy dismounted and the father got up on the donkey's back. Close to the market
town they encountered some women and children going to market. The women and
their children were walking and were jealous of the man riding. One of the women said, "Some people are very cruel to their children. That great, strong
man makes his son walk while he rides. Well, if I had a donkey, my son would ride with
me!"
"Oh son, you know I am not cruel. And I don't want anyone to think that I am. Jump up
behind me!"
The boy jumped up behind the father. This arrangement was not very pleasing to the
donkey. He was getting hot and tired, but he was a good little donkey and he did his
best to please his master.
As the three crossed the bridge into the market town, they met other farmers going to
the market. "What a cruel way to treat an animal, making him carry two people--one of
them a grown man! They ought to be fined for treating an animal like that and made to
carry the donkey!"
At once the farmer whispered to his son, "Get down. We will carry the donkey the rest of
the way, so people will not think I am cruel to animals."
The boy slid off the donkey and the man dismounted. Together they picked up the
donkey. At this, the donkey decided he had had enough of the farmer's nonsense for
one day. He kicked himself free, knocking the farmer and his son into the creek, and
trotted home as fast as he could
