How did people deal with the dust storms?

The 1930s were the first decade where the birth rate fell below 20 children for every 1,000 women. Never before had there been so few children living in the United States.

On Sunday, April 14, 1935, winds reached 60 miles an hour in the worst storm known as Black Sunday. It also carried dust for around 200 miles!

During the Dust Bowl, students were sent home from school to prevent "dust pneumonia". Sometimes, students were even kept over night because it was too dangerous to walk home in the dust storms.

Dust storms can cause static electricity. Drivers dragged chains behind their cars to ground them; otherwise, the engine would short out. If you reached out to shake someone's hand, the static shock would knock you both off your feet!
