Have you always dreamt of being an actor or actress? If so, you may need a little guidance to get you heading in the right direction. First of all, you have to be in a suitable location. You can start off in a metropolitan area that has a good theater or film community. Eventually, you will need to move to New York or Los Angeles to make a successful career of acting.
Next, you must take acting classes. All actors and actresses seek professional training. It's always a good idea to get references from successful actors and actresses to find the right acting class.
Thirdly, you have to get a headshot, which is a professionally done photograph of your face and shoulders. The fourth thing you will need to do is compose a resume. List all of your acting jobs; place the most current jobs at the top of the resume. As you gain experience, remove the more amateur work from your list.
Now that you have a headshot and a resume, send both documents with an introduction letter to all of the local casting directors and agents. Continue to follow up with the agencies every four to six months by sending updated resumes. Another important thing to do as an emerging actor or actress is to keep up with the trade publications, such as Backstage and Variety. These publications will give you good information about what is going on in the entertainment industry.
One of the best things you can do is attend events and parties where you will have the opportunity to meet entertainment professionals. Meeting the right people could give your career a huge boost. Last, but not least, you must persevere.
The entertainment industry is a tough business. Most likely, you will have to endure a lot of rejection before you ever get a worthwhile opportunity. However, if you tenaciously pursue your dream of becoming a professional actor or actress, you could be one of the few who become a superstar.
