Although environmental concerns have created a reduction in the amount of plastic purchased and used by consumers, there is still a large amount of plastic trash polluting the Earth’s land and water. There are currently five giant trash gyres, or whirlpools collecting floating trash, in our oceans. The North Pacific gyre covers nearly 5 million square miles of ocean with an estimated 11 million tons of plastic waste.
