For example, DST can cause sleep deprivation. It confuses the body’s biological clock. Sleep loss can lead to depression and dementia, psychiatrist Emily Deans says. A 2014 study conducted in the United States also found that the risk of heart attack increased by 24 percent the Monday after DST. This was compared to a typical Monday for workers. There are also economic consequences. In 2010, researchers from Chmura Economics and Analytics estimated that the U. S. lost $434 million because of DST. Workers lost sleep and were sluggish. They were less effective at their jobs.
