The Manassas Industrial School for Colored Youth evolved into part of the network of historically
black colleges and universities that now includes
Tuskegee University, Spelman College, and
Howard University. Most of these institutions
were established before 1964 with the intention of
primarily serving the African American community,
although they are open to all races. Today, there is
some controversy about whether such institutions
have outlived their purpose. After researching the
