One Night at Camp by Marty Alexander

The wind sang in a breathy whisper as it whipped the tree branches back and forth. Clouds and mist dimmed the moonlight, and the dampness from the earlier rains lay across the campsite like a cold, soggy blanket.
Carl clenched his teeth together, trying to still the shivers that shook his body. He slid down deeper into his sleeping bag as if he could somehow burrow into warmth that would also make him invisible to anything that might be lurking near the campsite. It worked, or at least he thought so as he drifted off to sleep.
Carl's feet felt the cold of a bare floor as he stood peering out of a cabin window into a thick stand of trees. The night was pitch black and mostly silent, with only the occasional call of an owl on the hunt.
Soon, the wind began to pick up. Leaves swirled past the window as tree branches seemed to stretch out and try to pry it open. Slowly, Carl started to back away from the window, thinking to go back to the welcome warmth of his bed. Then, he heard it. It was a sound that began like the first low rumbles of thunder before a storm—only this was constant and rhythmic with a pitch that rose and fell like one end of a creaking seesaw. Carl stood frozen as the noise seemed to draw closer to the cabin and grow louder with each passing second. He could neither run nor cry out. Then . . .
Jumping awake, Carl sat upright in his tent gasping for air. It took several seconds for him to understand what had happened.
He had been dreaming! Through the fabric of the tent, he could see the shadow of the tree branches as they fought the wind. He looked over at his best friend Todd, with whom he shared the tent. Todd rolled over onto his side, then settled back down. His snoring was the rumble in Carl's dream.
Relieved, Carl was about to tuck back in himself when Mr. Jakes, the chaperone, popped his head through the tent flap and said, "Let's head back up the road to the lodge before the storm catches us out here."
Carl was ready in a flash. He had never been a fan of camping out, and this trip had done nothing to change that.
