"I knew I needed to play my cards just exactly right. Rodeo is probably the nicest man in the whole world, but even his kindness has limits. He
never gets mean at all, but if he ever gets to the point where his kindness starts to wear thin, he just kind of goes away. He slips back into his
own mind, polite enough but distant, and there's not getting to him. I knew I needed to keep Ivan right where he belonged: in the warmth of
Rodeo's kindness, not out in the cold."
