In the past, people who lived in rural areas witnessed different strange occurrings. Since they did not know the scientific explanation for those happenings, they would come up with supernatural explanations as a way to rationalize things. Of course, nowadays, supernatural beliefs are probably rarer than they were in the past, but there are still people, especially elders, who traditionally teach their beliefs to younger generations.
