This quote resounds with the evilness of mankind, an issue that post-World
War II authors were wrestling with.
In this quote the reader senses the the loneliness of the individual, Eben
Flood in two places. The words "the road was his" means he was alone on
the road and the words "for no man else...to hear" indicates that no human
will hear Eben if he talks.
Through this quote the reader sees how the author is using the literary
element of personification in this poem.
