Focus on Speed Assessment Instructions Now that you are familiar with some ways to increase your reading speed, try this experiment to see how effective the tools are.

This assessment has three parts. Read all parts of the assessment, including the rubric, before beginning.

Part I: Read Aloud

Print the reading "Reading in the Workplace" selection.
Ask a parent or friend to keep time for you. If necessary, you may time yourself. Read aloud for one minute without using a guiding finger or eye focus. Record the number of lines you read.
Now do the same exercise, using your preferred method of eye focus. Record the number of lines read.
Repeat a third time, adding in your finger guide, and record the results.
For each time you read, multiply the number of lines you read by eight. This will give you the approximate number of words you read. Record this number in the second column of your chart.
