Read this excerpt from Lord of the Flies.
Jack drew up his legs, clasped his knees, and frowned in an effort to attain clarity.
"All the sameâin the forest. I mean when youâre hunting, not when youâre getting fruit, of course, but when youâre on your ownâ"
He paused for a moment, not sure if Ralph would take him seriously.
"Go on."
"If youâre hunting sometimes you catch yourself feeling as ifâ" He flushed suddenly.
"Thereâs nothing in it of course. Just a feeling. But you can feel as if youâre not hunting, butâbeing hunted, as if somethingâs behind you all the time in the jungle."
What does the excerpt indicate about Jack?
He is happy to have others take charge of things.
He wants people to think he is fearless.
His arrogance masks a degree of fear.
His kindness masks a streak of cruelty.

Excerpt from jane eyre charlotte bronte 2 i was glad of it: i never liked long walks, especially on chilly afternoons: dreadful to me was the coming home in the raw twilight, with nipped fingers and toes, and a heart saddened by the chidings of bessie, the nurse, and humbled by the consciousness of my physical inferiority to eliza, john, and georgiana reed.
