Digital Divisions
While the phrase “digital divide” is often used to describe the separation between those who have access to technology and those who do not, there is another divide when it comes to the digital world. That divide is over the worth and benefit of technology itself. Many people welcome the ease and efficiency that has come with an increasingly digital world. Others raise concerns about an overdependence on technology, as well as an increasing tendency to seek simple, easy answers rather than in-depth knowledge. When it comes to people’s reading habits, this tension is increasingly apparent.

Traditional, printed texts have certain cultural and practical benefits. The mere act of holding a book or article in one’s hand conjures ideas of reflection and introspection. A person sits with one object and one goal: obtaining information from the text. On the other hand, when online, a person is at a greater risk of distraction and might veer off course. Online, a reader strays from a digital text to research other ideas or check that the information in the text is true. However, it remains to be seen whether this way of reading is preferable to exploring ideas within a single text. The peaceful and functional appeal of an individual book or article seems difficult to replace.

Still, for all the simplicity and beauty of a printed text, there are also some limitations. Physical books, for example, can be difficult to carry and inaccessible for some. Digital texts allow greater portability. Digital texts can also be accessed more affordably—or even, at times, for free. Online texts can be adjusted to suit different people’s needs and preferences, including adjusting text size or converting to audio format. The interactive elements of digital texts can also encourage discussion. People no longer need to travel to the nearest book club to discuss a particular text, but rather, they can participate in online forums and discussion. With these various benefits and drawbacks, it appears that people have plenty of reasons to support whatever side of this digital divide they’re on.
