Ladies and gentleman, we are faced with a catastrophe of horrendous proportion. A zombie virus is overtaking the world! The epidemic has spread throughout almost the entire United States and
is working its way to Georgia.
Dr. Yoyvitch from the CDC has a vaccine! But he only has a limited number of vials. He has
therefore designated various “survivor communities.” From these survivor communities, the
Selection Committee will select the most worthy candidates for the vaccine. These candidates will
also join him on his compound until this whole thing blows over.
In keeping with our democratic governmental process, the Selection Committee will select the
individuals most suited for survival by majority election. Please prepare a brief letter in
which you present qualifications that make you a likely survivor. You must also address the
counterargument and provide refutation. After hearing your argument, the community will debate
its merits and vote on whether you should be one of the individuals permitted to receive the
vaccine and live on the compound.
As you prepare your argument, consider and include the following:
1. Your name and your given traits.
2. Nothing outside the realm of normal for your character’s given traits (but you can provide
background and personality—just keep it reasonable).
3. What are your strengths? What can you offer the new society?
4. What are your weaknesses? How will you overcome those deficits?
5. What makes a good “survivor”?
6. Two rhetorical appeals (label and explain each).
7. Four persuasive techniques (label each and explain the intended effect).
