Having read the first half of The Awakening, you have an idea of who Edna Pontellier is (as confusing and conflicted as she may be, even to herself). Throughout the plot points of the story, we see Edna fighting
the inner turmoil of her feelings and emotions and obligations. Even she does not seem clear what she is
battling or for what she is searching. As Chopin writes in the text, Edna "was not seeking refreshment or
help from any source, either external or from within. She was blindly following whatever impulse moved
her as if she had placed herself in alien hands for direction and freed her soul of respon
