It boggles the mind that the Westridge School District, according to a
recent article in the Westridge Daily News, has once again failed to
approve a recycling program. As I've already pointed out, this decision
by the school board models irresponsible behavior for our students.
And the damage to the environment goes without saying. Probably the
worst effect of the board's decision, however, is the economic impact
According to a detailed report generated by the Friends of the
Westridge Wetlands, it would actually be significantly cheaper for the
district to adopt a recycling program instead of having the would be
recyclables carted off as trash. Simply put, the district doesn't have a
way to justify its decision. From any perspective -philosophically,
educationally, environmentally, or economically - it's clear that the
board needs to rethink its stance on this issue.
