Background

Compared to other countries around the world, the United States is behind in the area of high-speed rail. The United States, however, is looking to the change this. The High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail (HSIPR) Program was created to help address the nation's transportation challenges. HSPIR is investing in an efficient network of passenger rail corridors that connect communities across the country.

Vision for High-Speed Rail

On April 16, 2009, President Obama announced a new vision for developing high-speed intercity passenger rail in America. He called for a collaborative effort to help transform America's transportation system. This transformation involves the creation of a national network of high-speed rail corridors. The plan calls for giving 80% of Americans access to high-speed rail within the next 25 years. Congress made $8 billion available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Congress continued to build upon the Recovery Act by making available an additional $2.1 billion in the years of 2009 and 2010.

High-Speed Rail Benefits

There are economic and environmental advantages to high-speed rail. High-speed rail would promote growth in regional economic productivity and expansion. This would stimulate domestic manufacturing, promote local tourism, and drive commercial and residential development. High-speed rail would also create new choices for travelers in addition to flying or driving. Lastly, it would reduce national dependence on oil and foster livable urban and rural communities.
