"The Premature Burial" is a horror short story written by American author Edgar Allan Poe that was first published in 1844. It tells the story of the unnamed narrator whose biggest fear is to be buried alive due to the fact that he suffers of a physical condition in which he falls into a death like trance and cannot be easily awakened. He ends up elaborating a tomb with equipment that will allow him to ask for help if he is buried alive. At the end of the story he wakes up in a dark confined space and when he is positive that his worst fear has come to reality, he cries out and is hushed by people and then he realizes that he is in the bed of a small boat. The theme of the short story is how terror affects the human mind and how Poe believes that it is unhealthy to dwell on those fears. The internal conflict that the main character has with his phobia of being buried alive makes impossible for him to have a normal peaceful life. There are only three characters which are the unnamed narrator, an unnamed friend who the narrator asks for help and the boat crewmen.
