Proctor: I’d have you see some honesty in it. Let them, that never lied die now to keep their souls. It is pretense for me, a vanity that will not blind God nor keep my children out of the wind. What does John Proctor mean with this statement in his last conversation with Elizabeth? He does not want to leave Elizabeth with the impression that he did anything wrong. The lie isn’t as terrible since he has lied to her before; it isn’t as sinful to lie again. There are many that would die before they’d lie; however, because he has lied before, he can do it again if it means staying alive. He would like to see something honest come of it all, and it isn’t as hard to tell a lie as others might think.
