Explanation:

The reason that the Jewish community was not afraid was because they were mislead. As shown in this quote " "There are rumors going around," said my father in a broken voice,  "that we're going somewhere in Hungary, to work in the brick factories. Apparently, the reason is that the front is to close to here. . . ." ". In the quote shown it shows us the Elie's father tells the people that the front is to close and that is why they are going to Hungary, but in all reality they are going there cause that is where the camps are set up. The people were mislead and that is why they are not afraid.
