Tone in a Drama

In a drama, tone plays an important part in the dialogue, or linen spoken by characters, Word choice

is a huge factor in tone and can send signals to the reader about how the character is feeling and how

the lines might sound when voiced by an actor.

For each piece of dialogue below, write an adjective to dencribe its tone. Then, underline the most

important word or words that helped you determine the tone.

1. PRESENT, I see a vacant seat... in the poor chimney corner,

and a crutch without an owner, carefully preserved. If these

shadows remain unaltered by the future, the child will die,

Words that help to set the tone: "crutch without an owner", "die".

Explanation:

The text shown above narrates the possible death of a child, who had his whole life ahead of him and who was very loved by his family. The revelation of a possible death imposes sadness on the reader who can imagine how this child had a lost future and when it was devastating for all who loved him.

Within literature, the tone is the feeling that the author wishes to convey to the reader through words and the narrated situation.

faulty parallelism is a grammar construction where there is no balance in the parts of a sentence they have a similar meaning but the grammar structure is not equivalent.

the correct version of this faulty parallelism in the sentence is:

jefferson wrote the declaration of independence, and he was the nation's third president.

the problem with the first version is that the sentence:

"jefferson was both the writer of the declaration of independence"

presents jefferson as both a subject and an agent for the verb "write" because if he was "the writer" then the declaration of independence was written by him, besides that fact, the sentence presents a dependent clause.

while the second sentence:

he was the nation's third president.

presents a basic subject+verb+object structure

so, to give a proper balance to the structure, or better said, to give a parallel structure, we must write a basic s+v+o structure in both sentences:

jefferson wrote the declaration of independence, and he was the nation third president.
