Anyway, when the Author says: "Mistress, in teaching me the alphabet, had given me the inch, and no precaution could prevent me from taking the ell."

I'm pretty sure he/she meant that now that they had been taught the alphabet, they had what they needed to learn to read and write, and nothing could stop them from learning to read and write.
