They believe in "civilizing" the clan and bringing "Christianity" to them, bringing along power and government with that. This led to a discord between the supporters of the new religion and that of the old, unrelenting men such as Okonkwo. Despite the clan having their own government and customs, the white men did not care about that and instead began to influence the men and women into 'changing sides' and pitting their 'traditional beliefs' against the new religion.
