The cancer was his cells, and it most certainly was a battle. Dying by cancer meant dying without honor or bravery. Men would rather die of battle scars or wounds than die sitting on a couch sick. Augustus was an honorable caesar, so he would not want to die for dishonorable reasons like a disease.
