'One hundred years ago, thousands of ragged kids had to work selling newspapers on the harsh streets of New York City' is a drama written anonymously. The drama, as the title suggests, is about kids who immigrated to New York and worked by selling newspapers, flowers, candy, etc to provide for their families and themselves.

Ani, in the play, is a twelve-year-old girl, who sells newspaer on the streets of New York along with other newsies. In Scene 3, after Ani sold a newspaper to a Factory Worker, she gives him back changes, for which other newsies teach her to cheat next time, as people don't notice. To which Ani asserts that she won't cheat, no matter what the conditions. But in Scene 4, she tries to cheat the Stockbroker, who is on trolley. That day, Ani was not able to sold any newspaper which meant that she won't be able to provide for her family. In her desparation to provide for her family, she dogded the Stockbroker.

But after dogding the Stockbroker, Ani feels bad for cheating him, evident when 'She looks at the dime and hangs her head.' She feels bad that her condition made her cheat someone.
