Passage 1: It is time for the residents of West Seneca to approve a tax hike that will allow for air conditioning in the high school. No one complains about heating the school every day during the winter, so a simple decrease of the school temperature in June should not be a big deal. This is an important time of year when students must focus on final exams, but weather conditions make it difficult to do so. Once we overcome the expense of installing air conditioning, the cost of running it for a few short weeks will be minor. Passage 2: As a student at West Seneca High School, I cannot stress enough how uncomfortable conditions are at school during June. Students are packed into the gym for final exams with only a few fans to circulate the stifling air. Last year I could hardly concentrate on my tests as beads of sweat dripped onto my desk. If the school district really cares about us doing our best on exams, it will provide conditions in which we can do so.

Which statement best compares the ways that the two arguments use appeals?

O A. Passage 1 appeals to ethics by mentioning differences in temperature, while passage 2 appeals to logic by explaining facts about exam conditions.

O B. Passage 1 appeals to logic by giving reasons for approving a tax hike, while passage 2 appeals to ethics by taking a professional tone.

O C. Passage 1 appeals to logic by giving facts about air conditioning, while passage 2 appeals to emotion by using personal experience and strong wording.

O D. Passage 1 is based on ethical appeals because of the speaker's role as a taxpayer, while passage 2 is based on emotion that is not backed up with facts. .
