Farmers found the "hole in the donut" and
used fertilizer to grow crops there. The
government later removed the soil to restore
the area
The "hole in the donut" was farmland before
becoming a park. An invasive species of
plant later grew there.
One of the crown jewels of South Florida,
the Everglades National Park, is home to
breathtaking views and many wildlife
species. It is also where ambitious efforts
to restore 6,300 acres of former farmland
are being carried out. The large section of
the Everglades known as the "hole in the
donut' was given this nickname because
it stands in contrast to the landscape
that surrounds it. The hope is that one
day it will be impossible to tell the "hole"
from the "donut." As of 2018, there are
fower than a thousand acres that still
need to be restored.
Those who farmed the "hole in the donut" did
not know their practices were harmful. Native
plants in the area had to be restored.
