Trout Casting Jason crawled onto the beaver dam. The trout were rising and eating the small bugs and flies that dotted the surface of the water. Jason figured that at least one of these fish was a big one, and he intended to catch it.
Half of the pond was in direct sunlight. Jason knew that the large fish would stick to the shady areas and cooler water, so he watched the shaded half of the pond. A fallen oak tree lay near the right bank. One end of the tree was stuck in the mud of the bank. The other end floated in the calm, dark water near the bank. Jason thought that the cool water under that log would be a nice place for a big trout to live.

He stood up carefully on the dam. The slightest noise would disturb the fish. Jason noticed that most of the bugs on the water’s surface were small and light brown. He found a fake bug in his fly box that was small and light brown. He carefully tied it to his line. Jason was ready.

All he needed now was a perfect cast. With his left hand, Jason deftly let out a little line at a time. With his right hand, Jason controlled the long rod. When he figured his bait was just over the floating end of the log, he let it drop. The fly fell silently on the closest side of the log then tumbled into the water. For an instant it floated. Then, in a splash of water and a flash of silver, it disappeared. Jason knew he had guessed right.
