At the beginning she worries about other people's reactions to her clothes, but she realizes that true friends won't make fun of what she wears.

At the start of the story, she is focused on herself, but then she realizes that she needs to consider other people’s feelings, too.

Justine recognizes that her mom feels guilty about her grandmother, and she wants to help her mom feel better.

Justine realizes that her mom and grandmother are trying to get her to wear clothes for little girls because they don't want her to grow up.
