*que drips of water* Imagine being hundreds of feet underground, and your goal is to go deeper. Imagine being underground for 8 hours and having to return to the surface after hours of not seeing daylight. And imagine looking at the beautiful rock formations. *zooms back to me being at the surface*
Hi, I’m Delaney Fillman, and this is the wonderful world of Caving.
Caving, also known as Spelunking, is the extreme sport of proceeding down caves of different challenges and levels. You use ropes and harnesses to expand your already known athletic abilities, smarts, and advance methods, to make your way down the cave. This recreational activity usually requires jackets and other gear for the cold, but if you’re in a more challenging cave, a wet suit is better for those waterfall climbs. Another recommendation for your comfort is elbow, knee, and foot pads so you are not scraping your joints across the cave. Also bring food because then, you won’t have to worry about hunger. This is considered extreme because
There is barely any safety regulations
You have to do crazy things like go into a 3 feet wide hole and army crawl for 15 yards.
There is always the question of ‘will I get hurt’
You could get lost, as some caves aren’t mapped as well
You might not have the strength to go back over an object you once had the strength for.
All of these could happen, and you could die, but only 3-5 people every year die from caving, and some get lost or suffer injuries, and possible get a disease or illness, like claustrophobia, hypothermia, dehydration, and cave disease.
A good time to go caving is around april and october, and start at 11 am - 12 pm, and some beautiful places to visit are the Blue caves in Croatia and The reed flute cave in China.
