From Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp Aladdin was the son of a poor tailor in an eastern city. One day, when Aladdin was walking outside the town, an old man came up to him, and told
him that he was his father's brother who had been away in a distant country and now wished to help him. He then put a ring on the boy's finger,
telling him that no harm could happen to him as long as he wore it. This strange man was actually no uncle of Aladdin. He wasn't related to him at all
but was a wicked magician, who wanted to make use of the boy's services.
The old man led Aladdin into the country, until they came to a very lonely spot between two mountains. Once there, he lit a fire, and threw some
gum into it, repeating many strange words. The ground then opened up before them, and a stone trap-door appeared. After lifting this up, the
magician told Aladdin to
to go below, and search for a lighted lamp. He was then to take the lamp away with him. Aladdin went down with the lamp
then returned with it, and called his uncle to help him up the broken steps. "Give me the lamp," said the old man, angrily. "Not till I get out safe," cried
the boy. The magiclan, in anger, then slammed the trap-door, shutting Aladdin inside. Aladdin was afraid. He accidentally rubbed the ring. Just then, a
figure appeared before him, saying, "I am your slave, the Genle of the Ring.
What do you
desire?"
