DIRECTIONS: Read the passage. Then, answer the questions that follow. Protein bars may not be so healthy after all. Every grocery store checkout line now seems to feature an array of protein bars that claim to be healthful alternatives to not-so-nutritious snacks. But experts say those claims may not hold up. Despite advertising on the bars’ labels, there is little scientific evidence that protein bars will curb your hunger, cause you to lose weight, boost your stamina, or build your muscles. Of course, everyone needs protein. But why get your protein from what is essentially a candy bar—loaded with sugar and saturated fat—that has been fortified with some processed soy or whey protein?

1. What is the writer’s claim? Where in the passage does it appear?

2. List three pieces of evidence that support the claim. Put an X by what you think is the best evidence for the writer’s claim.

3. What kind(s) of evidence could make the argument stronger?
