When females participate in a sport that is seen as 'strange/unusual' for their gender, women will be disadvantaged as they are not seen as equals to men who participate in the sport. They will find themselves having to do more to be treated fairly in the sport. This could include lack of respect from peers, sexist criticism, etc. However, when women participate in a sport that is seen as 'suitable' for women, there is less of a need to fight gender stereotypes of women as society has already accepted it as appropriate for women.
