Penelope had been waiting for her husband to return for years and everyone believed that he was dead and that she should marry again, but she did not want this and wanted to wait for her husband until the day of her death, because she loved him and was confident that he would return. . Which means that several suitors started to come to Penelope's house and although she didn't want them there, she couldn't send them away, because hospitality was one of the main values of that society.

The pressure for Penelope to marry was so great that she said she would be married when she finished weaving a blanket for her father-in-law. With that, Penelope deceived the suitors, because all night she undid the weaving and started again every morning, making sure that the blanket was never finished.
