Interpret President Bush’s quotation: “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” You will first prepare for this writing by working through the steps for writing.

1. Examine the quotation. Make a list of important details from the quotation.

2. Make a list of metaphors President Bush used.

3. What message did he want to get across to grieving Americans?

5. Use the quotation within the paragraph and interpret President Bush’s metaphors, using the words, foundation and steel. Be sure to include a strong concluding sentence to close the paragraph. Write the concluding sentence below.

6. Using the work above, write your full paragraph.
