In the short story, The Ransom of Red Chief, Bill Driscoll and the Narrator kidnapped a little boy who Bill called Red Chief as a joke because the boy was very spirited and had red hair. They wanted to make a quick ransom from the boy's father and use it in a real estate deal.

They did not know however, just how stubborn the boy was and the morning after they had kidnapped him, Bill was woken up by the boy sitting on his chest ready to scalp him because the boy thought they were playing a game of Indian. Bill was so traumatized that he never slept the entire time they were with the boy.
