New World Report
There were many countries that were included in the exploration and colonization of the Americas. While there are many similarities between Spanish, Dutch, English, and French explorations, France is by far the most interesting of them all. They funded several expeditions to the New World, and they supported the colonization of the newfound land.
France sent several men on expeditions in an effort to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. Along with the Spanish, Dutch, and English explorers, France was seeking the riches that the New World had to offer. To begin with, the King of France strongly encouraged the colonization of “New France”, as they called it. France was also a Catholic nation that was very devoted to expanding Catholicism around the world. One could say that the reason that France began to explore and colonize in America could be categorized as religious and economic.  France supported colonization by granting fur-trading companies trading charters. While they made a great effort to successfully colonize, these efforts proved to be futile. The colony's growth was ruined by its inconsistent policies. Cardinal Richelieu, put control of the empire into the hands of the government-sponsored Company of New France. The company was unsuccessful. Because of the unsuccess of the Company of New France, the king took direct control of New France in 1663. Even though they became much more successful under the control of King Louis XIV, the French empire still failed to match the wealth and growth of New Spain and the British colonies. The Northwest Passage is located entirely in the Arctic Circle, nearly 1,200 miles from the North. Between the giant, 300-foot icebergs, and the large masses of sea ice that would cover the passage, trapping ships for months at a time, the journey across the treacherous Northwest Passage had proved to be a lethal one. In 1534, King Francis I of France sent Jacques Cartier on a voyage to the New World to search for a faster route to Asia and the riches the new route would bring. He explored the coast of Newfoundland and the coast of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Cartier also discovered today’s Prince Edward Island, but he failed to find the Northwest Passage. Though the Northwest Passage is important to the French trade routes of today, Jacques Cartier sadly retired before he could discover the important passage. (History.com Editors Northwest Passage)
In conclusion, even though their attempts to colonize were unsuccessful and they weren’t as rich as Spain or the English, the French empire still managed to accomplish great things during the years of early exploration and colonization. Â
