Their Eyes Were Watching God Assignment 3 (TEWWG 3)
Ch. 1-6 Assessment Paragraph
DUE TUESDAY, November 24 2020 at midnight

Below are two quotes from Their Eyes Were Watching God. Please write a paragraph, using each quote to explain how it represents the theme “search for identity.” This paragraph should show your ability to analyze the theme, your knowledge of what we have read so far, and your explanation of how Janie reflects on her identity with quotes for support. You do not have to use the full quotes. You can choose which part of the quotes you want to use to support your ideas about Janie’s identity, but you need to use at least part of each quote.

“She was seeking confirmation of the voice and vision, everywhere she found and acknowledged answers. A personal answer for all other creations except herself. She felt an answer seeking her, but where? When? How?” (Hurston 11).

“She had her first taste presiding over it the day it was complete and finished. Jody told her to dress up and stand in the store all that evening. Everybody was coming sort of fixed up, and he didn’t mean for nobody else’s wife to rank with her. She must look on herself as the bell-cow, the other women were the gang. So she put on one of her bought dresses and went up the new-cut road all dressed in wine-colored red. Her silken ruffles rustled and muttered about her. The other women had on percale and calico with here and there a headrag among the older ones” (Hurston 41).

Make sure your paragraph includes:
Topic sentence- mentions title of book (MLA format- italicize) and main idea of paragraph.
Quote analysis- use and explain each quote and what it shows about Janie’s identity. This part should be the longest! Each quote should have about three sentences explaining it.
Wrap-up para- last thoughts on the overall paragraph topic.
MLA format- double spacing, italicized book title, Times New Roman font, size 12

Grammar concepts- make sure you highlight these:
Pair of dashes: use a pair of dashes to show extra information.
Ex- The school- which was recently redone to update classrooms- welcomed the children after a long summer.
Single dash: Used like a colon to add explanatory or amplifying information, especially when the information is surprising.
