"I know you re a good ballplayer," he [Rickey] barked. "What I don't know is whether you
have the guts.
I knew it was all too good to be true. Here was a guy questioning my courage. That virtually
amounted to him asking me if I was a coward. Mr. Rickey or no Mr. Rickey, that was an
insinuation hard to take. I felt the heat coming up into my cheeks.
