She suffered from smallpox, leaving her disfigured. Moreover, she stammered a lot and was only able to speak clearly at the age of five. But all that did not deter her. She went to the village's school and get an education. So, when her parents arranged a marriage for her to a much older man named Bishamber, and the man demanded more money in "exchange" for her "deformity", she refused to let that ruin her life. Rather, she decided to remain single and become a teacher and help others instead of becoming a burden for her parents.
