The minister officiates at both a funeral and a wedding on the day he first appears with the veil. We would expect the veil to be inappropriate to the joy of a wedding, but it seems equally disturbing at the funeral. Why might one woman imagine, during the procession to the graveyard, that the minister walks ‘hand in hand’ with the dead girl’s spirit? In what sense does he now seem dead to others?
