A verb is a word that expresses an action or a state of being. The three main types of verbs are action verbs, linking verbs, and auxiliary, or helping, verbs.
Action verbs show action or possession. They may be classified as either transitive or intransitive. A transitive verb has a direct object, whereas an intransitive verb does not have either a direct object or an indirect object.
Linking verbs connect a sentence’s subject with a noun or an adjective that renames or describes the subject. Be and its forms—am, are, is, was, and were—are linking verbs.
Auxiliary, or helping, verbs occur before action verbs or linking verbs. They give more information about time, possibility, or obligation. Auxiliary verbs include can, might, must, will, and would. Additionally, the forms of the verbs to be, to do, and to have sometimes serve as helping verbs.
