4. What central idea can be found in BOTH Passage 1 and Passage 2? Use at least ONE detail from EACH text to support your answer. Write your answer in the space provided. Remember to clearly reference the text. In 1998, the Russians launched a control module called Zarya. This was the first piece of the International Space Station (ISS). A US space shuttle crew attached a second piece of the ISS. The space station continued to grow. The first ISS crew arrived in November 2000. Today the ISS orbits the Earth from about 250 miles above the ground. It is the product of teamwork between space agencies in the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe, and Japan.

Since the first crew arrived, humans have lived in the ISS performing studies in low gravity. Many studies benefit people living on Earth. For instance, new methods for purifying water are saving lives. Tech designed for use in space has improved laser eye surgery. Robot tech designed for the ISS is used to perform delicate operations to remove tumors.
