I woke up and blinked at the sun peeking over the horizon, and the rooster crowing, and the cattle mooing. I got out of bed, and began digging in my drawers for my normal plaid shirt and chaps. Then I set my hat snugly on my head and my gun belt from the rack. Soon after I found them, I put them on, and headed out of my door to the kitchen. I fired up the familiar gas stove and got the preparations to make eggs I gathered the night before. When it was done, I put in on the plate I set down, and scarfed it down, wincing as it stung my throat. I drank a glass of milk to soothe my aching throat, and then headed out the door to the stables. When I got to the stables, I got the heavy saddle, saddle pad, bridle, and whip from the tack room. I smiled and waved at my stallion, Dusty, and put the saddle pad on, then the saddle, and then the bridle. As I stepped up in the stirrup and swung myself in the saddle, I grabbed the reins, the familiar leather all but made to fit into my calloused hands. I settled into the saddle and snapped the reins, the stallion bolting off with amazing speed, but responding quickly when I tugged on the reigns to slow down. I saw my co-workers already unhitching the fence, getting ready, and in their saddles already. I heard them exclaim certain sounds to keep the cattle going, and I joined in, feeling the early morning sun beat down on my back, and I galloped off as the cattle bolted through the gates, and south towards the Rocking Chair Ranch. "Haw" I heard, all around me, and with it, the bellowing of the cattle. I smelled the morning air mingling with the cool night aroma everywhere I went, the rush of galloping almost intoxicating. After hours of running on the plains, I began feeling the pain of being saddle sore, and I slowed down a bit, falling behind. I recognized my brother drifting towards me, and I waved, as he slowed down to my speed. "I heard there's a big ol' river up yonder." He explained. I nodded. "We'll have to be careful, 'en." I replied, keeping my eyes forward. He galloped off, going to the middle of the herd. When midday creeped onto us, we were finally at the river. "S'not too bad." I said as I hopped off Dusty, and grabbed the reins, and walked across the wide river. Soon, I couldn't touch, and I held onto Dusty's tail as he expertly crossed the river, with years of experience, having done it before plenty of times. Soon, we were at the bank, and I got back in the saddle, dripping wet. I watched as the rest of the herd crossed, and then we were back running.  After grueling hours of heat, we finally saw the Rocking Chair Ranch, and I was flooded with relief. We were greeted by a middle aged man, and balding. I regarded him with a tip of my hat, and he tipped his back. "Take 'em to the west pasture." He said as he pointed to the fence. I nodded, and started cracking the whip, and the cattle obediently trudged into the fence. I got down and closed the gate, and locked it. "Come on inside, you must be dog tired." The man said. I wearily stomped into the ranch house, and hung my hat, now dried by the hours of riding, the air rushing through it. Then, I slumped on the couch, and rested, after a long, long day.
