had an elaborate process for creating them, using
chemicals and careful wrapping in strips of cloth. But in
different parts of the world, mummies are sometimes
made by nature.

Natural mummies are made in bogs throughout Europe. A
bog is a wet area where dead moss, called peat, builds up.
Normally, oxygen and bacteria work together to break
down dead animals and plants. However, peat blocks out
oxygen and contains special chemicals that stop the
growth of bacteria. This prevents anything left in a peat
bog from decaying. Thousands of remarkably preserved
"bog bodies" have been found in peat bogs.
