Read the excerpt from “Egyptian Tombs: A Grave Matter.” For two months, Carter and his team removed each of Tutankhamen’s precious treasures one by one. They even removed his body. Of course, this final raid was done in the name of science. However, after all of the items were scientifically studied and tested, they were never returned to the tomb. Instead, the king’s treasures were scattered in various museums and homes throughout the globe. Surprisingly, even though in 1922 grave-robbing was still considered a horrible crime, no one protested. What’s more, no one considered King Tutankhamen’s view of the afterlife. For if the pharaoh’s beliefs were true, Carter’s removal of Tutankhamen’s treasure doomed the pharaoh to spend eternity as a poor god indeed.

The purpose of this excerpt is to show that

Carter put a lot of care into the removal of the tomb’s contents.
scientific expeditions are very different from typical grave-robbing.
Carter’s actions were similar to the actions of past grave robbers.
the contents of Tutankhamen’s tomb can be found in museums.
