One of the protagonists and main characters in the story Hamadi, by Naomi Shihab Nye, is a girl named Susan. She is a 14-year-old freshman in high school, who lives in U.S, Texas. She is reaching the point in her life where she starts to question her surroundings and the world, which leads her to an interest in a family friend, Saleh Hamadi, who’s an old-fashioned man and very wise. She is a complex character in this story because she has many different relatable traits, has many thoughts and relationships in the story and changes throughout the story.

We have a connection.’ She added.” Susan voices her thoughts on Hamadi, and how she feels as if she has a connection to him now that they both have the same interests. She feels as if she could learn a lot from him since he is very wise.

“She didn’t want him to forget anything. She helped her American mother complete tedious kitchen tasks without complaining—rolling grape leaves around their lemony rice stuffing, scrubbing carrots for the roaring juicer.” This shows that Susan is caring of her family and helpful. “All that evening Susan felt light and bouncy. She decorated the coffee can they would use to collect donations to be sent to the children’s hospital in Bethlehem. She had started doing this last year in middle school, when a singing group collected $100 and the hospital responded on exotic onion-skin stationery that they were ‘eternally grateful.’” Susan is excited that Hamadi will be helping her sing the carols, but this sentence also shows that she’s done this before, saying that she had participating in charity before. This evidence also supports that Susan is a caring and helpful person.

Susan is a wise person herself, and also very goal oriented. “Tracy looked glum. ‘Sometimes you remind me of a minister.’” Susan’s friend Tracy says that Susan is like a minister. A minister, based on this story’s definition, would be like a priest, or a teacher for life lessons. This fits Susans personality, since she does give advice

to me i think class room sitting education is better. i do online school and i have not learned a think haha. when i sit in the classroom i just sit there and kind of pay attention but still i get so far ahead in the class when im doing online i have nothing else better to do but play video games and i sit in school and learn and have friends and just actually learn. when i'm doing online i sit here listing to music and get on and and look up the answers i guess that is my fault for being a cheater. but to be honest i think sitting in the classroom is better.
