Goals Advise incoming high school students on the importance of creating a strong sense of self as they make the transition from middle
school or junior high to high school. Explain how a strong sense of self can help a student succeed in high school.

Role
For the purpose of this project, you should imagine that you're a high school senior who works as an aide in the guidance
department, and you frequently do orientation presentations for incoming freshmen.

Audience

Your target audience is a class of high school freshmen who may need a little encouragement to stand up for themselves, get
involved in school activities, and join the high school scene.
Situation
The guidance counselors and several teachers at your school have noticed that many incoming freshmen spend (read: waste) the
first quarter of high school trying to figure out how to fit in. Some of these faculty members have asked you to put together a "highly
visual" piece of advice that highlights some of the traits of a successful high school student

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows. ‘you make me feel uncivilized, daisy,’ i confessed on my second glass of corky but rather impressive claret. ‘can’t you talk about crops or something? ’ i meant nothing in particular by this remark but it was taken up in an unexpected way. ‘civilization’s going to pieces,’ broke out tom violently. ‘i’ve gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things. have you read ‘the rise of the coloured empires’ by this man goddard? ’ ‘why, no,’ i answered, rather surprised by his tone. ‘well, it’s a fine book, and everybody ought to read it. the idea is if we don’t look out the white race will be—will be utterly submerged. it’s all scientific stuff; it’s been proved.’ in this passage, tom’s ideas about race relations come off as uncivilized. what literary device is fitzgerald using here? irony personification metaphor simile

Which excerpt from chapter 3 of the strange case of dr. jekyll and mr. hyde illustrates a character vs. character conflict? hosts loved to detain the dry lawyer, when the light-hearted and loose-tongued had already their foot on the threshold; they liked to sit a while in his unobtrusive company. the large handsome face of dr. jekyll grew pale to the very lips, and there came a blackness about his eyes. “i do not care to hear more,” said he. “this is a matter i thought we had agreed to drop.” “my good utterson,” said the doctor, “this is very good of you, this is downright good of you, and i cannot find words to you in. i believe you fully; i would trust you before any man alive, ay, before myself.” but i do sincerely take a great, a very great interest in that young man; and if i am taken away, utterson, i wish you to promise me that you will bear with him and get his rights for him.”
